Audi has a somewhat convoluted history. It was founded in 1909 in the Saxony region of Germany by August Horch – it was Horch’s second attempt at starting a car company after falling out with the management of his eponymous first company, Horch. In 1932, Audi became one of the four car companies to make up the Auto Union group, ironically along with Horch.
The Audi logo used today is actually the Auto Union logo from the 1930s – four interlocking rings to represent the four original brands of the union; Audi, Horch, DKW and Wanderer.
Like many industrial companies, Auto Union was virtually wiped out by the Second World War and its aftermath. It relocated to Ingolstadt, Bavaria, in southern Germany and in 1958 was bought by Daimler-Benz (parent company of Mercedes-Benz).
In 1964, Daimler sold Auto Union to the Volkswagen group. Volkswagen resurrected the Audi brand, which had not been used since 1939. Over time, Audi became the premium brand in the Volkswagen group, at least until Bentley and Porsche joined the family.
Today, Audi sells over 150,000 cars per year in the UK, and over 1.7 million worldwide. The company boasts a model range of more than 50 cars, and Its biggest-selling model in the UK is the Audi A3.
Audi has suffered in the fallout of the Volkswagen group’s ‘dieselgate’ scandal of 2015, where tens of thousands of diesel cars were found to have employed hidden electronic systems to override the cars’ emissions systems. This meant that the vehicles were producing significantly more pollution than claimed in an attempt to improve performance and fuel economy. Thousands of Audis around the world were recalled for fixes, and the company changed its claimed emissions ratings on many of its models as a result. In the US, the Volkswagen group was fined $14 billion and Audi of America has been forced to compensate owners or buy back affected cars. Audi UK has faced considerable criticism for not offering something similar to British owners.
In motorsport, Audi has had numerous successes in touring cars, rallying and, most notably, endurance racing. It won Le Mans 13 times in 18 attempts, and finished on the podium every single year. Audi withdrew from sportscar racing at the end of 2016 in the wake of the company’s dieselgate scandal, although it plans to enter a works Formula E team in 2017.
