Hi. I currently have an untaxed Vauxhall Astra. I thought it was being direct debited (I set this up when I first purchased the car) but it only last that year. The car needs major engine work and isn’t worth repairing. I am in the process of purchasing a new car and want to trade this one in.

Do I need to pay off the outstanding tax before trading it?

Hi Rick. You’ll certainly need to tax it or declare it SORN – your insurance won’t be valid unless you’ve done one or the other as well.

I’m not sure if the DVLA’s online system will backdate your payment or not, sorry.
