Audi UK is a wholly-owned British subsidiary of Audi AG in Germany, which in turn is part of the huge Volkswagen Group.
Audi was founded in Germany 1909 by August Horch – his second attempt at starting a car company after falling out with the management of his first one.
In 1932, Audi became one of the four car companies to make up the Auto Union group. Today’s Audi logo of four interlocking rings was originally the Auto Union logo from the 1930s.
Auto Union was virtually wiped out after the Second World War. It relocated to Ingolstadt in southern Germany and in 1958 was bought by Daimler-Benz (parent company of Mercedes-Benz).
In 1964, Daimler sold Auto Union to the Volkswagen group, which resurrected the disused Audi name. Over time, Audi became the premium brand in the Volkswagen group, at least until Bentley and Porsche joined the family.
Today, Audi sells over 150,000 cars per year in the UK, and over 1.7 million worldwide. The company boasts a model range of more than 50 cars, and its biggest-selling model in the UK is the Audi A3.
In motorsport, Audi has had much success in touring cars, rallying and endurance racing. It won Le Mans 13 times in 18 attempts before withdrawing from sportscar racing at the end of 2016 in the wake of the Volkswagen group’s dieselgate scandal.
