Hello, looking for some advice. My mother bought a Vauxhall Corsa two years ago second hand from a major car dealer. The car is just over three years old now.

The car broke down and she is being told by a dealer she requires a new engine at cost of £4K. Surely under the consumers act a car engine should have a life expectancy of more than three years and under 20K miles?

Hi Douglas. One of the risks in buying a second-hand car is that you never really know how it’s been treated or maintained.

The Consumer Rights Act covers a period of six months where the law works in your favour. After that, it’s up to you to show that the car was faulty when you purchased it, which in reality is almost impossible two years later.
