Stand by your beds, The Colonel here.

Just to be clear, my username isn’t me getting ideas above my station. It is a tribute to someone who I very much admired and who passed away some years ago. He was a lifelong, career soldier. A Brigadier (one up from a Colonel!) in the Pakistan Army, and a magnificent moustache to match. He was a friend and neighbour who, upon seing my Silver Grey Z4M for the first time instantaneously named it “The Colonel” and so it stuck – I am aware of the “Nazi Staff Car” connotations, but he actually fought in the war, as a boy almost, so I’ll take it from him.

I’m less into cars and more into motoring, enjoying the journey as much, if not slightly more, than the tool. My overwhelming memory of “car ownership” as a child was one of my father getting ever more miserable as he attempted to repair something on a Wolseley/Hillman/Ford/Vauxhall, on a wet Sunday afternoon, so I swore to always have the best, newest, and most exciting car that I could manage to have and so far, in twenty years of motoring, it has held me in good stead.

Thank you to Disco for setting up this refugee colony.

Stuart, you are a true gent. Now if you could be a dear and sort out my avatar, signature, the North Korea problem, and get my child through High School and University that would be just splendid.

Rich, your avatar looks fine just the way it is, probably more amusing for it.

Well, I’ve joined. I hope others follow! My avatar is supposed to be batfink but I cannot adjust the picture size on the ipad!

Had a quick gander at PH and although clearly popular, it looks like a complete mess and impersonal although I see that TBH has joined there.

    Hi Rich, Prodigy here :)

Looks like I get to kick off the introductions –

I’m Josh and have been on the autocar forum under a different alias for several months. Now that autocar has bitten the dust, i’ve come over here for a look. I’d just like to say thanks to stu for setting up a forum here in very quick time once we realised what was going on at autocar. Especially in including some of the features we have asked for over there but never got, like the ability to subscribe to topics and like/dislike posts.

Hi Stu. Many thanks for setting this up. Have really enjoyed your posts on autocar and I hope this gets a lot of the regulars from there posting. Looks like a great site. Joseph

stuart: Who is your favourite racing driver still alive?

If you will permit me to modify the question a little, my favourite driver still racing would be Fernando Alonso. I think the way he goes about his business, at Ferrari, is quite something to admire. McLaren you were fools, you let something special slip away through, one can only imagine, the fog and pressure of over complication.

Favourite driver passed on would have to be James Hunt. Mainly because he was a top British driver when I got interested in motorsports, as a child, who then went on to commentary which, given his character, one might not have expected him to do, but his dry humour was a nice counterbalance to Murray Walker’s exciteableness (not a word, I know).

Favourite driver still alive but no longer racing is Michael Schumacher. Nothing to do with racing though (or not as much as it might), but because he did something really nice for my daughter (for reasons I’ve never understood she adores him), on her birthday at the 2006 Chinese GP, and even had the decency to then go and win the race, from sixth. His last race win.

    1. Thanks Stu for setting this up, and I hope it picks up as it should…Autocar, your loss (I’m sure they really couldn’t give one, but hey).

    2. Stu, sort it out! Usernames in lower case only? And no spaces? thecolonel just looks like a trade name for a back passage ointment, so I’ve just had to Frenchy up my username because, however silly it may look, being Frenchified always looks so chic, even if bits soon fall off.

    Cheers!

    Looking good Stu,

I have a feeling that your site will be the new hang out for us poor Autocar refugees.

    Hi Stuart

What the difference between regular TDI and blue motion? I thought blue motion gives better Milage but you said no difference.

    I am confused now.

Thank you Richard for your advice.

I am considering Skoda Octavia. What do you think about Mark 6 Golf Diesel Blue Motion.

I generally drive on motorway and after hitting 70 I never felt Prius has hold of the road and when crossing lorries it’s thrown to one side. rosy harp turns i have never felt it is safe I have to considerably slow down.

Thanks for getting back so soon.I appreciate that you must get lot of emails.

I am looking for sturdy family car with good economy, less noisy in the cabin, cruise control, low CO2 emissions and tax. I do around 17000 miles per year and I have owned Toyota yaris, mark 5  VW FSI 1.6 Match (was expensive to run) and now Toyota Prius (1.8 T3) which is economical but  not very stable car.
