Congratulations Stu on your first bit of spam! Have to admit, your spam is far better than Autocars. I never clicked on links from Autocar… :-P
You’re worrying me TBH. It sounds like the older you get, the more sensible you become. I’m far too sensible now and I’m only in my thirties :-?
Wow, I like misreading. I misread the fact that I typed ‘misread read’ until I read it again.
I must put down the wine I stole from PHIR… 8-O
1.6 petrol Focus is one i would avoid, gutless and thirsty. I would opt for a 1.8 diesel Focus which is what we drive at work (moved to Astras now). 115bhp and 50mpg not over optimistic. It’s not as smooth or quiet as the 110bhp 1.6 but it has that little bit more torque for overtaking.
You can pick up an ’05 for £3-£4k with under 80k on the clock. They get abused a lot at work but still come back for more. The interior of the Mk2 is much more to my taste and also pretty bullet proof. Not to mention great to drive. The downside is the ride is not fantastic and it’s not that exciting to look at but then again, you’ll have moved up from a Corolla in the excitement stakes!
Welcome PhilM4000! You don’t have to be controversial to be interesting :)
I’m sure there are other former regulars watching as well as newbies. Come and join us, the more the merrier :-D
If you love driving- and I assume you do- a 4×4 is not the way to go unless you do a lot of offroading. If you do, I would buy a cheap old banger for the mudslinging and a decent car for the road stuff. I’ve driven a Freelander and thought it was… nice. Pleasant interior for the driver and felt quite ‘airy’ for me but that was about it I’m afraid.
But as Stu says, the artist-formerly-known-as-Lesia44 has driven his parents one if I remember rightly.
My Z4iS renewed in January – £374, £350
I misread read that and thought a third of a million was a touch excessive….
It maybe a case of lazybastarditess, but I don’t go to brokers anymore. I found them too expensive several years ago and never bothered since. I pay about £300 for my 120d with a £200 excess. I can live with that but I might double check with a broker next time.
Awesome cars to drive, I agree. But there are too many downsides for me to even think about one. Impractical, very hard ride, expensive to repair and reliability (from friends experience) is not good. It is a proper hot hatch though. Golf GTi, Focus ST etc are just too large and maybe even too fast to fall in that category for me now.
Can’t say I have a great knowledge of HPI reports. It sounds like the VRM issue is fairly innocent and if the service history, chassis number etc adds up, it’s probably a safe bet. But… there ate plenty of cars on the market and if you have ANY doubts, there is no reason not to look elsewhere.
What are you thinking of buying?
I like the colour…
By my rough calculation TBH, you’re only spending £60k ish on cars…. so what are you doing with the rest?! Being half Italian, I was expecting a Maserati, a Ferrai FF or putting your money down as a deposit for the impending Lambo SUV to take your dogs with you…
Great story TC. You’re right, celebrity persona means I never would have thought Schumacher could ever be nice enough and thoughtful enough to remember your daughter 3 yrs later.
Always like Nigel Mansell when I was growing up but that was probably because he was British and a lot of attention on him.
Always had some admiration for Colin Mcrae and his philosophy; if in doubt, flat out! I definitely follow this when in the job car… :-D

Yes! But only on the iPad on this website…
I’m thinking of getting a ‘new look’ avatar anyway. I’ve got a couple of ideas but feel free to suggest without too much abuse!
Worst car ever driven? Well, I’ve driven a fair few death traps that i’ve seized for no insurance etc but I can’t blame the cars. Otherwise, I generally hate the Corsa response car that we have in our county!
Worst car ever bought? The Ka we had. It was a bleeding nightmare. Clearly a Friday afternoon car.

Focus ST. That’s as close to ‘family car’ as I’m going.
911. A while a go when I got banned I had one on loan so my other half had to drive me round in it for a few days before it went back and she’s been nagging me to buy one ever since.
Is 1.7 enough for me to get an Aventador as well? Or would that be a bit rash?
A bit rash? Only if you don’t need the £1.7m for anything else!!
Didn’t realise you got banned, I thought you upto away with it on a technicality for a 100mph+ dash on the motorway? What did you get banned for?
Focus ST: Get the estate, it’s got a much nicer rear end unlike LGs… Speaking of which, if you have a large bottom, you’ll change your mind as the bucket seats are clearly designed by a size zero woman!
