Citroën has unveiled a modern interpretation of its iconic 2CV at the Paris Motor Show, previewing a new affordable electric city car that is expected to enter production by 2028.
Called the ‘2 CV Concept’, the new model draws inspiration from the original 2CV, which was produced from 1948 to 1990. Citroën says the forthcoming production car will prioritise affordability, low weight and practicality, much like its predecessor.
The new model will sit between the tiny Citroën Ami and the larger C3 in the manufacturer’s range, offering an alternative to increasingly large and expensive new cars.
Classic 2CV styling with a modern twist
The concept model’s design incorporates several recognisable features from the classic 2CV, including separate round headlights, pronounced wheel arches, a curved roof and relatively upright bodywork. Other details include exposed windscreen wipers, a sweeping bonnet and 19-inch steel wheels inspired by those fitted to the original car.
At the rear, a black tailgate extends down towards the bumper, flanked by slim LED lights. The concept also features a fabric sunroof – one of the original 2CV’s most distinctive features.
Citroën says the design has been developed with manufacturing costs and ease of repair in mind. For example, the bumpers are separate from the bodywork, allowing them to be replaced independently.

Simple interior with unusual features
Inside, Citroën has taken a minimalist approach, replacing the conventional dashboard with a cylindrical structure supporting the steering wheel, controls and digital instruments. A small eight-inch touchscreen provides access to infotainment functions, while a detachable radio can also be used as a portable speaker.
Other features include fabric door handles, a removable storage basket instead of a traditional centre console and seats upholstered in brightly coloured tartan fabric. The concept also features Citroën’s Advanced Comfort seating technology, with a front seat that can be pulled out for use when the car is stationary.
Several smaller details reference the original 2CV, including unusual storage compartments inspired by the famous requirement that the original car should be capable of carrying eggs across a ploughed field without breaking them.
As this is still a concept vehicle, Citroën has not confirmed which interior features will make it into the production version.

Electric power with an emphasis on low weight
The forthcoming 2CV-inspired model will be fully electric, with Citroën targeting a weight of around one tonne. Keeping the car relatively light should allow the manufacturer to use a smaller battery, reducing production costs and energy consumption.
However, Citroën has not announced battery capacity, motor output, driving range or charging specifications.
The concept also incorporates tyre-monitoring technology developed with Michelin, designed to continuously assess tyre conditions and allow the vehicle to adjust its behaviour accordingly. It remains unclear whether this system will feature on the production car.
Production model planned for 2028
Citroën says the new electric city car will be manufactured in Europe and developed around forthcoming European E-Car regulations, which are intended to support the production of smaller, more affordable vehicles.
The manufacturer is targeting a starting price of around €15k. Citroën plans to unveil the production model within the next two years. Keep in mind that the finished car that eventually arrives in UK dealerships could differ considerably from the concept shown in Paris.
