Second place – SEAT Mii

SEAT Mii - second place, Safe used car first car 2017

If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident in a SEAT Mii, you will be just as safe as in the winning Skoda Citigo.

The SEAT was pipped to the post because there are fewer of them out there (half as many as the Skoda, according to my very quick check just now) and even fewer of those have the optional AEB included.

However, it was a bit cheaper than the Volkswagen up! so it finished second.

Like the Citigo, the ranking applies to any Mii on sale as it’s only been available for a few years. It has a five-star rating from Euro NCAP (actual car tested was a Volkswagen up!).

Third place – Volkswagen Up

Volkswagen up! - third place in safe used first car 2017

Volkswagen may be a bit miffed that its prized city car was beaten by its two subsidiary models, but that’s largely a result of its own brand value.

There are about twice as many used Ups for sale as Skoda Citigos, and four times as many as the SEAT Mii, but they are dearer on average. However, the Up is still every bit as safe as the other two.

Like the other two, the results apply to any up! on sale and it carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
