Unlike the European trophy, which Jaguar won for the first time this year with the I-Pace, the World Car title was the brand’s second – the F-Pace SUV was crowned champion in 2017. Both titles were decided on the votes from international panels of leading motoring journalists.
The car triumphed over a strong final shortlist, comprising the Audi e-tron and the S60 from Volvo, last year’s WCOTY winner with the XC60.
Judges commended the I-Pace for its state-of-the-art powertrain and its ability to attract new customers to the brand. These views were acknowledged by Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive, who said that the I-Pace is the first step towards an ideal of zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion.
“We started from a clean sheet of paper to create a new benchmark – the world’s best premium electric vehicle, and a true Jaguar driver’s car,” Speth said, adding; “For I-Pace to be awarded 2019 World Car of the Year gives our first all-electric vehicle the ultimate recognition it deserves.”
Another British brand celebrating at the awards night was McLaren, its 720S named World Performance Car, while Audi earned a consolation with the World Luxury Car prize for the A7.
