Summary
The Jaguar I-Pace is an electric medium-size SUV/crossover vehicle. It is the first electric vehicle from Jaguar, and is not based on any other model in the Jaguar Land Rover family.
The I-Pace has received very good to outstanding reviews from the UK motoring media, as well as many awards – including the 2019 World Car of the Year. However, it’s built by a third-party company in Austria, rather than here in one of Jaguar’s UK factories, so it doesn’t get one of The Car Expert’s ‘Best of British’ badges.
The Jaguar I-Pace has been particularly praised for being a brand-new design, rather than adapted from a normal petrol or diesel vehicle, and is generally considered to be one of the best electric cars currently on sale – albeit one of the most expensive.
Jaguar has announced that it will cease production of the I-Pace (along with almost every other model in its range) before the end of 2024, ahead of a complete relaunch of the brand in 2025.
As of August 2024, the Jaguar I-Pace has a New Car Expert Rating of A with a score of 72%.

“With its first all-electric model, Jaguar not only beat wealthier rivals to the punch but also set a high bar for those to come after it. That’s made amply evident by driving it again five years later. Even though it has only had a few minor updates over the years, the Jaguar I-Pace is still competitive, even if it is now far from class-leading.” (Illya Verpraet)

“The I-Pace is a game changer for a different market. If you want zero emissions, a confidence-inspiring electric driving range, a practical body style, a feel-good interior, as well as all-wheel drive traction, rapid performance, and, crucially, a rewarding driving experience, at this moment in time the Jaguar I-Pace is the top choice. In fact it’s really the only choice.”

“If you’re thinking of making the jump to electric, you may wish to wait until Audi’s new e-tron SUV arrives later this year. Jaguar might have got there first, but if the e-tron combines a typical Audi interior with lots of tech and a useable electric range, it might give the Jaguar a hard time.”

“One of the original large premium SUV EVs, and arguably still one of the best. There are rivals that can travel further on a charge or carry more people and things, but none is as fun to drive, comfortable and easy to live with as the Jaguar I-Pace. It also still looks as sharp as the day it was launched.” (James Disdale)

The Jaguar I-Pace has a better-than-average reliability rating, according to data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our commercial partner, MotorEasy. However, it should be noted that this is based on a very small number of cars at this time, so this could shift quite significantly over coming months and years.
In terms of consumer reliability surveys (as opposed to directly measured reliability data), in a 2020 What Car? survey of the 50 most reliable cars in the UK up to eight years old, the Jaguar I-Pace ranked equal 31st and was the highest-ranked electric vehicle. On the other hand, What Car? also decided in 2021 that the I-Pace was the 22nd most unreliable car up to five years old.

The Jaguar I-Pace is a relatively expensive car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.
It’s electrical efficiency (the EV equivalent of miles per gallon for a petrol or diesel car) is quite poor, and insurance premiums are likely to be significantly higher than the average car as well.
That said, an official battery range of 279 miles (which varies from 277 miles to 292 miles, depending on which model you choose) is above average. So you shouldn’t need to worry about running out of charge in normal day-to-day driving.
