Genesis has unveiled the GV90, a large luxury electric SUV that will sit at the top of the Korean manufacturer’s range as the brand’s answer to the electric Range Rover.

The production version of the brand’s ‘Neolun’ concept first shown in 2024, the GV90 is the largest and most luxurious Genesis yet. It’s substantially larger than the Electrified GV70 and is intended to compete at the top end of the luxury SUV market.

That makes the GV90 a leftfield alternative to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Volvo EX90 and BMW iX.

Big battery and 657hp

The GV90 sits on a new ‘eMP’ electric platform developed specifically for Genesis flagship models, meaning that the luxury SUV has different underpinnings to the similarly-sized Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

A 124kWh battery – the largest yet fitted to a Hyundai Group model – powers an electric motor on each axle. Together they produce 657hp, making the GV90 the group’s most powerful road legal electric car to date.

Genesis currently quotes an estimated 311-mile range, although importantly this comes from the manufacturer’s own development testing rather than a independent European testing figure. The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes using a 350kW rapid charger.

There’s considerably more chassis technology than in Hyundai and Kia’s large electric SUVs, too. Electronic limited-slip differentials are fitted to both axles, along with adaptive multi-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering. The latter can turn the rear wheels by up to five degrees to make such a large vehicle easier to manoeuvre.

A luxury lounge on wheels

Inside, a 24-inch central OLED display combines the instruments, navigation and entertainment functions while driving. When parked, it can rise by nine centimetres to become a larger 25-inch cinema-style screen. There is no digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel – a head-up display provides driving information by projecting graphics on the windscreen directly ahead of the driver.

Other available equipment includes a 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, massage seats, plenty of ambient lighting throughout the cabin and a panoramic roof with adjustable transparency that can be adjusted across six sections.

Genesis has also done away with the conventional starter button. Opening the door powers up the vehicle, and pressing the brake pedal makes it ready to drive.

GV90 ‘Neolun’ gets pillarless coach doors

The regular GV90 uses conventional doors, but Genesis will also offer a more extravagant GV90 ‘Neolun’ model with rather unique ‘arch gate’ doors. This is a pair of electrically operated rear-hinged rear doors with no permanent B-pillar between them and the front doors.

Removing such an important structural component required extensive reinforcement. High-strength beams are incorporated into the doors and the passenger compartment effectively gains a concealed roll-cage structure.

The ‘Neolun’ will also be offered with an ‘Executive Suite’ four-seat configuration. This brings individual rear seats, a real wood floor with radiant heating, a refrigerator, tables and a partition separating passengers from the luggage compartment. When the car is parked, the front seats can even rotate through 180 degrees to create a face-to-face lounge arrangement.

The car’s safety technology package is rather unique too. All GV90s have 12 airbags, including what Genesis claims is the world’s first roof airbag, designed to deploy across the glass roof during a serious rollover.

When will the Genesis GV90 come to the UK?

Genesis hasn’t yet announced UK-specific pricing, specifications or an exact launch date. However, the GV90 is expected to reach Europe during the first half of 2027, with precise UK timing still to be confirmed.

Its arrival here looks likely given that Genesis is currently expanding its British dealer network – its first dedicated UK dealership opened in Glasgow in July.

Pricing is also unconfirmed. We expect the lead-in GV90 model to command a six figure price tag, with the more elaborate ‘Neolun’ costing tens of thousands more than that.

That would put the GV90 in a very different part of the market from Genesis’ existing electric SUVs – the current Electrified GV70, for example, starts at around £67k in the UK.
