Summary
The Maserati Levante is a large SUV/crossover, and the first vehicle of its kind for the brand. It was launched in 2016 and has received various minor updates each year.
The Levante has received mixed scores from the UK motoring media, ranging from poor to very good. More recent reviews seem to have rated the car more favourably than earlier reviews, suggesting that the latest updates have been worthwhile improvements.
Since the arrival of the smaller Maserati Grecale in 2022, the entry-level Levante models have been deleted, pushing the large SUV further upmarket. The previously offered diesel engines have also been dropped along the way, leaving a choice of four-cylinder or V6 petrol power. These are badged as hybrids, but are really only mild hybrids and can’t run under electrical power alone.
As of January 2024, the Maserati Levante has an New Car Expert Rating of E with a score of 50%, which is well behind the class leaders from Porsche and BMW.

The Car Expert
“Is the Levante an objectively better car than the Porsche Cayenne? No. Will that matter to a lot of buyers? Of course not – the Maserati badge is a byword for exclusivity and taste.”

“The Maserati Levante SUV is competitively priced, and practical enough to open the brand up to a new group of buyers.”

“Given that this is the company’s first bash at building an SUV, the Maserati Levante is a very decent effort. There’s a lot to like about it; and, even if it’s not the very best car in its class, it’s good enough that the air of exclusivity around it may well be enough to tempt buyers to sign up.”

“Of course it delivers plenty of performance (0-62mph in a launch control assisted 4.1 seconds, as you ask), but it’s the noise that really smears a grin across your face. “

“Objectively, a Porsche Cayenne S is a better car. But does it offer the style or flair of the Italian? Not really, and for those who just fancy the idea of owning a Maserati, that’s likely the only justification they’ll need.”

“On idle it’s more refined than we expect, but put the Trofeo’s V8 to work, and it gives a terrific eight-cylinder bark.”

“The battle is not just to build a car, but to somehow endow it with your brand identity – even if that’s as a builder of high-performance sports and GT cars. Until now the Levante failed to meet that brief, but with the addition of a far more interesting engine coupled with a genuinely capable chassis, we now have a real Maserati SUV.”

“It may not be a thoroughbred V8 grand tourer that Maserati is used to building, but it’s still got a lot to shout about. It drives well, looks good, has a premium feel and has that badge appeal that many customers will be drawn towards.”

“The Levante is powerful, incredibly comfortable on the move and has a top quality interior. Yes the gear selector is clunky, the brakes could do with more bite and the steering lacks feel through corners, but that doesn’t detract from what is one of the most appealing and desirable SUVs around.”

No safety rating
As of January 2024, the Maserati Levante has not been crash tested by Euro NCAP. Based on its price and sales volumes – and the fact that it’s now near the end of its production life – it’s unlikely to ever be tested.
Eco rating
Independent economy and emissions ratings from Green NCAP
No eco rating
As of January 2024, the Maserati Levante has not been lab tested by Green NCAP, and we’re not expecting it to ever happen. If it does, we’ll pubish the results right here.
Reliability rating

No reliability rating
As of January 2024, we don’t have enough reliability data on the Maserati Levante to generate a reliability rating.
The Car Expert’s reliability information is provided exclusively to us using extended warranty data from our partner, MotorEasy. As soon as we have sufficient data on the Levante, we’ll publish the score here.
Running cost rating
Monthly cost of ownership data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by Clear Vehicle Data
CO₂ output | Average | Score | Variation | Score |
Petrol models | 277 g/km | D | 243 – 363 g/km | D – D |
Service and maintenance | Cost | Score |
Year 1 | £574 | D |
Year 2 | £1,413 | D |
Year 3 | £2,102 | D |
Year 4 | £2,470 | D |
Year 5 | £3,398 | D |
Overall | £9,957 | D |
The Maserati Levante is an expensive car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data. The caveat to that is that we only have limited information at present.
We don’t have indepedently verified fuel economy data, but the closely related CO2 emission scores are poor. That suggests that fuel consumption will be very thirsty.
Likewise, we don’t have insurance group rating data for the Levante, but it will almost certainly be ranked in the most expensive grouping based on its price tag, sophistication and desireability.
As you would imagine, servicing costs over the first five years will be high, although possibly not quite as high as some other luxury SUVs.
