Summary
The Peugeot 508 is a medium-sized liftback and estate model. The current version was launched in 2018, and is considered a big step up from its predecessor. The liftback body style was launched first, with the SW (estate) versions arriving about six months afterwards.
The 508 has received a wider range of scores than usual from the UK media, ranging from average to outstanding. Particular praise has been given to its striking design, comfort and safety levels, while criticisms have been made regarding its driving experience and practicality compared to rivals.
A mid-life facelift for the Peugeot 508 arrived in the UK in late 2023. This is an update to the current model, rather than a significantly new vehicle. There are some minor styling and trim changes, along with some interior technology updates.
As of September 2025, the Peugeot 508 holds a New Car Expert Rating of C, with a score of 63%. It scores highly for its low average CO2 emissions (thanks to the plug-in hybrid). However, its safety rating and media review scores are only average, while running costs, the 508’s historic reliability record and Peugeot’s new car warranty coverage are all poor.

“The tweaks to the Peugeot 508 are subtle and haven’t changed the core of the car, which is not without its flaws (some infotainment issues and a tight rear cabin), but still delivers on many fronts in hybrid form. It’s a comfortable, efficient, refined and practical machine that can cut it with the best the VW Group brands have to offer.”

“The Peugeot 508 plug-in is pricey, but low running costs should help offset this. Its dynamics are fine, if not fun, while the level of kit in Allure trim is great. However, while there’s lots of tech, some of it could be better thought out and executed.”

“Handsome, frugal and good to drive, the Peugeot 508 offers plenty to the large family car class. There are rivals that are more spacious, but little comes close in terms of style. We’d avoid this top-spec petrol GT model, though, as there are more affordable yet well-equipped options lower down the range.”

“The all-new Peugeot 508 is exactly that: all new. It shares so little with its predecessor, in fact, that it’s difficult to fathom why the firm kept its name. While it can’t match the badge appeal of its German rivals, it puts up a fair fight in a highly competitive class.”

“The Peugeot 508 isn’t the most practical estate car. If you want that, head straight to Skoda as the Octavia Estate and Superb Estate models both offer vast loadbays and more interior space at lower cost. But as an alternative to a BMW 3 Series Touring, Audi A4 Avant or Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake, the 508 is genuinely worth a look as an interesting alternative.”

Notes on safety rating
The Peugeot 508 was tested by Euro NCAP back in 2018 and awarded a five-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2025 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.
Although the rating has now expired, the score is still useful if you are comparing a used 508 to vehicles of similar age – whose ratings will have probably also expired.

As of September 2025, the Peugeot 508 has not been assessed by Green NCAP.

The plug-in hybrid looks great on paper, but that’s due to the woeful EU/UK goverment lab tests that are completely useless at measuring a plug-in hybrid…

Reliability score
All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims
The Peugeot 508 has a reliability score that’s very worse than average, according to exclusive workshop and extended warranty data provided by our partners at MotorEasy. This score covers both the current-generation 508 and the original (pre-2018) version.
The average repair bill to date has been a bit over £600, although gearbox repairs have been very expensive with an average of almost £2,000.
If you’re looking at a used Peugeot 508, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase covers all of these potential problem areas.

New car warranty duration | 3 years |
New car warranty mileage | 60,000 miles |

Peugeot’s new car warranty is pretty much the bare minimum offered in the UK, with a duration of three years and a limit of 60,000 miles. Other rivals in the price bracket do better (and in some cases, much better).
In addition to the standard new car warranty, hybrid versions of the 508 have an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery components.
Warranty on a used Peugeot 508
- If you are purchasing an ‘Approved Used’ 508 from an official Peugeot dealership, you will get a minimum six-month warranty included.
- If you are buying a used 508 from an independent dealership, any warranty offered will vary and will probably be managed by a third-party warranty company.
- If you are buying a used 508 from a private seller, there are no warranty protections beyond any remaining portion of the original new car warranty.
If you’re looking to buy a used car that is approaching the end of its warranty period, a used car warranty is usually a worthwhile investment. Check out The Car Expert’s guide to the best used car warranty providers, which will probably be cheaper than a warranty sold by a dealer.
