Summary
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a medium-sized SUV/crossover, unveiled in early 2017 and launched in the UK in early 2018. it sat between the smaller ASX and larger Outlander in the Mitsubishi SUV range until the company withdrew from the UK market altogether in September 2021.
Unlike the other traditionally rugged Mitsubishi SUVs in the family, the Eclipse Cross prioritises style over practicality, and competed against car-based crossovers like the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar and countless other rivals.
The Eclipse Cross received praise for its sharp styling and general comfort, but was criticised for its driving experience and lack of sophistication compared to the class leaders. The good news is that reliability seems to be pretty good, with the 2022 What Car? reliability survey ranking it as equal first in the family SUV category.
As of May 2024, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross holds a Used Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 65%. It scores top marks for its low running costs, although its CO2 emissions and safety rating are only average, and its media review scores were poor.

“In a class where there are so many talented options, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Black Connected edition struggles to stand out. While it’s spacious inside, and the sliding rear seat bench adds to its practical appeal, there are simply too many compromises elsewhere.”

“Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a big step forward for the brand and worth a second look, even if it does fall behind class leaders.”

“The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is an eye-catching family SUV with plenty of standard kit and some fairly spacious back seats but alternatives do feel much posher inside.”

“The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a reasonably stylish SUV with a rugged edge that helps it stand out from numerous rivals that include cars such as the Skoda Karoq, Volkswagen Tiguan, SEAT Ateca, Peugeot 3008 and Toyota CH-R.”

“Where the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross falls down is on the road. It’s not especially good to drive with too much lean in corners, a hard ride on models with bigger wheels and artificial feeling steering. It’s disappointing given how promising the rest of the car is.”

Model reviewed: 1.5-litre petrol manual 4
Score: 6 / 10
“A perfectly capable mid-size SUV with a good petrol engine and tidy handling, but the small boot stands out like a sore thumb in this hotly contested class, and the lack of satnav seems like an oversight too. If you can master pulling away smoothly, this manual version is a nicer car to drive than the CVT.”

“Nicely styled with a commodious cabin and well equipped (if confusing) facia, the Eclipse drives reasonably well, but it would drive better without that CVT transmission and a bit more concentration on the medium-speed dynamics.”

“A comfy, versatile crossover that looks distinctive enough to be recognisable in this crazily crowded market. Better to drive than the first impression suggests, but in the 4×4 you’ve got to fight your way past an obstructive CVT.”
