Summary
The Audi A6 is a large executive vehicle available in saloon and estate (called Avant) model. The current model is the fifth generation in the A6
Top-spec performance versions of the A6 saloon and estate are called the S6. There is also the A6 allroad model, which has a beefed-up estate body and improved ground clearance for off-road driving, at which it is most capable and better than many luxury SUVs.
There is also the extreme, 600hp RS 6 Avant, which has extensive alterations from the regular A6 family and is not included here.
The Audi A6 has received consistently good to very good scores from the UK media since its launch, with particular praise for its interior space, comfort and refinement.
Generally testers rate it higher for its comfort than its driving characteristics – “it cossets occupants rather than thrills its driver,” says Auto Express, while Autocar says, “Not quite the dynamic prowess of a 5 Series, but still a decent thing to sit in and waft along.” Top Gear adds that the A6 is not particularly fun behind the wheel, but is “safe, solid, quiet and dependable”.
Audi always impresses with the build quality of its cabins and the technology available for its cars, though the twin-touchscreen centre console display of the A6 is not universally popular. “Not everyone is going to like the lack of buttons or physical controls,” says Auto Trader.
The current A6 will be the last model available with petrol, diesel or hybrid power. Audi has reorganised its model naming system and all fossil-fuel models will now take odd numbers, while EV models will take even numbers. As a result, the existing A6 will be replaced by a new A7 model due sometime in 2025. In summer 2024, a new all-electric Audi A6 e-tron was unveiled, which is only available as an EV.
As of September 2024, the Audi A6 has a New Car Expert Rating score of B (65%), although its Used Car Expert Rating is poorer, with a score of D (59%). This is dragged down by its poor reliability results and high running costs, which carry more weight in our used car calculations.

Reliability score
All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims
The Audi A6 has a very poor reliability score of just 32%, according to workshop and warranty data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our partners at MotorEasy. Please note that this score covers both the current-generation A6 and the previous (pre-2018) iterations.
Almost a quarter of all reported problems with the A6 relate to its electrical system, with an average repair bill of more than £400. Engine problems are (unsurprisingly) expensive, and are unfortunately rather common too, costing around £1,700 on average. Warranty claims relating to the car’s gearbox also have an average cost of around £3,000 and they’re certainly not uncommon.
If you own an Audi A6 or you’re looking at purchasing a used A6, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase covers all of these potential problem areas.
It’s not just our data that calls the A6’s reliability into question. In a 2021 reliability survey, What Car? ranked the Audi A6 21st in its list of the most unreliable cars up to five years old. Things got worse in 2022, when the A6 was ranked dead last for reliability in the luxury car class.

The Audi A6 is relatively expensive to run, according to data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our commercial partner, Clear Vehicle Data. Thes figures are averages of the overall Audi A6 range (not including the high-performance RS 6 model).
Fuel consumption is average for diesel models and poor for petrol models. The plug-in hybrids look good on paper, but this is largely a function of the flawed EU/UK government testing processes (an average fuel consumption of 208 mpg is obviously ridiculous, but that’s not Audi’s fault).
Servicing and repair costs are nothing special, either, and start getting very expensive after the first three years. Overall, the A6 is slightly more expensive to run than the BMW 5 Series.
