Summary
The Nissan Micra is a small supermini-class five-door hatchback. The current version was launched in early 2017, and received new engines and minor trim updates in Winter 2018/19.
The Micra has received mixed reviews from the UK motoring media since it was launched, with earlier reviews tending to awards higher scores than more recent reviews. It has received praise for its practicality and standard safety kit, but is no longer considered to be among the best superminis on sale.
As of January 2024, the Nissan Micra has a New Car Expert Rating of B, with a score of 65%. It rates highly for its low average CO2 emissions and running costs, while its reliability record is also good. Its safety score is only average as the Euro NCAP rating has now expired due to age – the testing was done back in 2017.

“The Nissan Micra is a huge improvement over its predecessor. It has a stylish design, smart-looking interior, and is stuffed with every imaginable safety gizmo. Unfortunately, it lags behind the competition in a number of key areas, especially practicality and comfort, and the jittery low-speed ride could be a turn-off.”

“Even the most basic Micra comes with lane departure warning, lane keep assistance and auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection – gizmos that aren’t often standard even on cars from the class above. Weirdly, though, there is no standard air conditioning or alloy wheels.”

“If Nissan’s aim was to build a car that is comprehensively better than its predecessor it can count the new Micra as a job well done. However, despite improvements across the board it still falls short of being exceptional, which represents something of a problem against rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and Skoda Fabia.”

Notes on safety rating
The Nissan Micra was originally crash tested by Euro NCAP back in 2017 and awarded a five-star rating (for UK models, which included all the safety kit as standard. Some European-market Micras only got a four-star rating as some of the safety tech was optional).
However, this rating expired in January 2024 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.
However, if you are comparing a used Micra to vehicles of similar age, whose ratings will have probably also expired, its safety rating score is still useful.

The Nissan Micra has a reliability score that’s better than average, according to exclusive extended warranty data provided by our partners at MotorEasy. This score covers both the current-generation Micra and the previous (pre-2017) version.
The majority all reported problems with the Micra relate to its suspension, although the average repair bill is only about £200. Be aware of gearbox problems, however, – although rare, they are expensive with an average repair bill of more than £2,300.
If you’re looking at a used Nissan Micra, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase covers all of these potential problem areas.

The Nissan Micra is a very affordable car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.
Most bills should be pretty small, as servicing costs are low and the Micra has a very low insurance group.
Fuel consumption is only average, which is surprising for a supermini-size small car. However, it should still be reasonably economical in day-to-day driving.
