Hyundai hints at Venue, its smallest SUV yet

Hyundai has revealed the first sketches of an upcoming SUV that is set to become the smallest in the Korean brand’s range.

The Venue is set to be unveiled at the New York motor show later this month. Details of the newcomer are currently scarce, although Hyundai says it “symbolises a trendy, unique style” and confirms it will become its smallest and “most affordable” SUV yet.

Hyundai’s corporate design is clear to see in the model sketches, with thin headlights sitting atop a large grille up front and a sloping roofline leading to a squared-off rear. The car is reminiscent of the Kona SUV, which will sit above the Venue in the Hyundai range.

Interior drawings showcase a familiar look too, with a basic-but-functional cabin design.

Hyundai Venue The Car Expert

Hyundai has yet to confirm which markets the Venue will be launching in, although UK sales would appear likely with the current demand for compact SUVs in Britain.

Industry sources suggest that the Hyundai Venue could share its underpinnings with sister brand Kia’s latest Soul, which will be sold exclusively as an all-electric car in the UK when it arrives later this year.

If so, it’s likely the Venue will go on sale as an EV, although conventional petrol and diesel powertrains could still play a role.

Following its New York unveiling on 19th April, the Venue is predicted to go on sale in 2020.

Hyundai Kona (2017 to 2023)

Summary

The Hyundai Kona was a small SUV/crossover that was launched in 2017, sharing its platform with the Kia Stonic. It was updated for 2021, with improved connectivity and a new sporty-look trim dubbed N-Line. It was removed from sale in 2023, making way for a new version of the Kona.

The Kona was available with a choice of petrol and hybrid power up until it was replaced – diesel versions were axed in 2019. Hyundai also sold the Kona Electric which is covered in a separate report as it is substantially different to this regular version. A Kona N performance model joined the range in mid 2021.

The Hyundai Kona received mostly average to good reviews from the UK motoring media, with very consistent scores from different sources. Its equipment, especially the infotainment, and its five-year warranty comes in for praise, but the car is criticised for a dull interior and uninspiring drive.

Reviewers pointed out that the car now faces some high-quality rivals, such as the Ford Puma and Skoda Kamiq. “The latest revisions have made it a bit more competitive, but it’s still not the most practical choice – nor the best drive,” comments Heycar.

The Hybrid introduced as part of the 2021 update did not greatly impress either, Auto Express pointing out that it’s not a lot more eco-friendly than the 1.0-litre petrol version but cost a lot more to buy. Thankfully the hybrid system did not take up boot space because at 374 litres it’s pretty modest compared to rivals.

Even the Kona’s updated looks didn’t chime with all – “surely the most outrageously styled Hyundai the world has ever seen,” commented Top Gear.

In December 2022, Hyundai announced an all-new Kona range, which is expected to arrive in the UK by Summer 2023. It will be based on the new Kia Niro range, and will be slightly larger to provide more room for rear-seat passengers.

No longer on sale, the Hyundai Kona has a Used Car Expert Rating of B, with a score of 67%. It scores top marks for its low running costs and CO2 emissions, but its safety rating has now expired due to age and its media review scores were very poor.

Kona highlights

  • Reasonable value for money

  • Quality infotainment

Notes on safety rating

The Hyundai Kona was originally crash tested by Euro NCAP back in 2017 and awarded a five-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2024 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

Although the rating has now expired, the score is still useful if you are comparing a used Kona to vehicles of similar age – whose ratings will have probably also expired.

The Hyundai Kona is cheaper to run in the long run if you opt for a hybrid model, according to data exclusively provided by our commercial partner Clear Vehicle Data.

With an average fuel consumption of 56 mpg, hybrid models offer over 10 mpg more on average than petrol models. Regardless of the model chosen, insurance premiums should be pretty affordable.

Porsche 911

Summary

The latest Porsche 911 (known as the 992) made its debut at the Los Angeles motor show in November 2018, with the first customer cars arriving in the UK in the second half of 2019.

This page covers ratings and reviews for the ‘standard’ 911 coupé and cabriolet models. This includes the rear-wheel-drive Carrera and Carrera S models and all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and 4S versions, which are available in coupé, convertible and targa body styles. The higher-performance 911 Turbo models have a separate page, as does the 911 GT3 lightweight performance model.

The Porsche 911 has received consistently outstanding scores from the UK media sources who have driven the car in its various forms, and is considered a significant improvement on the highly praised 991 generation.

Like earlier generations of 911, the 992 delivers outstanding performance while maintaining an impressive degree of everyday practicality. However, prices have been steadily increasing over previous models.

As of October 2025, the Porsche 911 range has a New Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 56%. This is a significant drop in our new ratings system compared to the previous system, which only measured media reviews (which remain outstanding). In ownership terms, however, the 911 scores poorly with ratings of E for its CO2 emissions, reliability and running costs. We also don’t have a safety rating as the 911 has not been tested by Euro NCAP.

This diminished score reflects the shift in our Expert Rating Index to highlight ownership data rather than just driving dynamics, so it’s not surprising that the 911 is affected – along with every other Porsche model and most other sports/luxury cars.

As of October 2025, the Porsche 911 range has not been crash tested by Euro NCAP.

Unsurprisingly, the Porsche 911 is a pretty expensive car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

The car’s insurance premiuns sit in the highest possible bracket, and the 911’s service and maintenance costs over five years of ownership are higher than the market average too.

Reliability rating

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

As of June 2025, the overall Porsche 911 family has a very poor reliability rating of 12%, according to workshop and warranty data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our partner MotorEasy. This applies to both the current 911 range and previous generations.

Also worth noting is the very high average repair cost for 911 repairs, at nearly £2,000. In most categories, the average repair bills are significantly higher than normal, but the most notable is engine repairs, which is the most common problem area and also the most expensive. The average repair bill for faults with the famed Porsche flat-six engine was almost £3,500.

If you own a Porsche 911 or are interested in buying a used 911, make sure that any used car warranty covers all these critical areas.

Porsche’s new car warranty is generally average, with a duration of three years and no mileage limit. In addition to the standard new car warranty, the new 911 Hybrid has an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery components.

Warranty on a used Porsche 911

  • If you are buying an ‘Approved Used’ Porsche 911 from an official Porsche dealership, you will get a minimum 12-month warranty included.
  • If you are buying a used Porsche 911 from an independent dealership, any warranty offered will vary and will probably be managed by a third-party warranty company.
  • If you are buying a used Porsche 911 from a private seller, there are no warranty protections beyond any remaining portion of the original new car warranty.

If you’re looking to buy any used car that is approaching the end of its warranty period, a used car warranty is usually a worthwhile investment. Check out The Car Expert’s guide to the best used car warranty providers, which will probably be cheaper than a warranty sold by a dealer.

Fiat 500X (2014 to 2024)

Summary

The Fiat 500X was a small SUV/crossover hatchback. Although it shared a family resemblance to the Fiat 500 city car (along with most of its name), it was actually a completely different and much larger vehicle.

The 500X was launched in 2014 and received a substantial mechanical update in Summer 2018, although visual changes were minimal. It ended production in 2024, being replaced by the Fiat 600.

The Fiat 500X received mostly average to poor review scores throughout its life from the UK motoring media. It was praised for being stylish and decent to drive, while criticisms centred around its practicality and space compared to rivals.

From Spring 2022, the 500X became available with a mild hybrid petrol engine, which improved fuel efficiency and (unlike most mild hybrid motors) was able to provide a very small amount of electric power to move the car under limited conditions. However, its electrical assistance was much less than that found on a regular hybrid car, which can travel some distance and at normal urban speeds on electrical power alone.

As of February 2026, the Fiat 500X holds a Used Car Expert Rating of B, with a score of 65%. It scores top marks for its reliability record, while its running costs and CO2 emissions are also better than most cars. However, its safety score is now poor as its Euro NCAP safety rating has long expired, and its media review scores are very poor.

The Fiat 500X was awarded a four-star safety rating from Euro NCAP back when this model was launched in 2012. However, this rating expired in January 2022 as the 500X no longer met the requirements for a four-star car. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

However, if you are comparing a used Fiat 500X to vehicles of similar age, whose ratings will have probably also expired, its safety rating score is still useful.

The Fiat 500X range has a very good reliability rating of 89%, according to extended warranty data from our commercial partner MotorEasy. The only caveat to this score is that it currently comes from a small number of data points, so could shift significantly as more claims are added to MotorEasy’s database.

The average repair cost to date is just under £340, with warranty claims being relatively affordable across the board to date.

The Fiat 500X is a relatively affordable car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

Servicing and insurance bills are likely to be better than almost anything else in its class, with an outstanding set of A-grade scores. Unfortunately, fuel consumption is only average for the 500X, and that’s the largest running cost of all. You’ll probably find that similar cars from other brands will cost less in petrol bills each month.

DS 7 (2018 to 2025)

Summary

The DS 7 (originally the DS 7 Crossback) was a medium-sized SUV/crossover that is also currently the flagship of the DS Automobiles range. It was sold in the UK from 2018 to 2025.

The DS 7 shared its platform with several other models in the PSA family, such as the Peugeot 5008 and Citroën C5 Aircross, but its price and equipment were positioned above its sister brands.

Launched back in early 2018, this was the first SUV from DS Automobiles to be sold on the European market, although it had sold other vehicles in China previously. It was also the first all-new car for DS, as previous models had simply been rebadged Citroëns.

A plug-in hybrid version of the DS 7 Crossback was added to the range in the middle of 2019, alongside a single diesel engine option – traditional petrol models were discontinued.

A mid-life facelift arrived in the UK in late 2022. It brought the usual styling tweaks and trim changes, and DS decided to drop the car’s ‘Crossback’ tag to simplify things.

The DS 7 received average to good scores from UK media sources. It was praised for its comfort and quality, but criticised for an uninspiring driving experience. “The DS 7 ticks the boxes regarding quality and comfort”, said Car‘s Dave Humphreys. “It leaves a bit to be desired on the dynamic front, but so long as you’re not hunting down apexes, it’s a comfortable cruiser.”

As of February 2026, the DS 7 holds a Used Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 58%. It scores top marks for its low CO2 emissions (thanks largely to the plug-in hybrid model). However, its safety score and running costs are only average, while its media reviews are poor.

DS 7 highlights

  • Attractive exterior looks
  • Spacious and comfortable cabin
  • Well-equipped as standard
  • Refined and economical engines

DS 7 lowlights

  • Some cheap interior materials
  • Key rivals are cheaper to buy
  • Uninspiring driving dynamics
  • No seven-seat models

Running costs for the DS 7 are pretty much average, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

We don’t have independently verified fuel consumption data, but the CO2 levels (which are linked closely to fuel consumption) are nothing too exciting. The plug-in hybrid looks great on paper, but that’s due to the woeful EU/UK goverment lab tests that are completely useless at measuring a plug-in hybrid…

Insurance costs are middle of the road, while servicing and maintenance over the first five years are also average. So while there’s not a lot to get too excited about here, it’s likely that other premium rivals are going to be just as expensive – if not even dearer – to run.

Explained: London’s new Ultra Low Emission Zone

A new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ)has come into force in central London today. Aimed at helping reduce emissions in the city, which exceed legal limits in several areas, it’s in addition to the existing congestion charge and is likely to affect many drivers.

Here, we take a look at everything you need to know about the new zone (ULEZ) and what it may mean for you.

Where is the new Ultra Low Emission Zone?

Initially, the ULEZ – which replaces the T-Charge – will apply to the same area as the existing London congestion charge – that is, inside the Inner London Ring Road.

From October 2021, it will extend out to the area within the North and South Circular Roads. The congestion charging zone, however, will remain the same as it does today.

Map showing London ULEZ and CCZ areas
A map of the new London ultra low emissions zone (ULEZ)

When does it operate?

The ULEZ zone will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.

This is in contrast to the congestion charging zone, which only operates from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and doesn’t operate on public holidays and between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day inclusive.

What will it cost me to drive in the zone?

If your vehicle is liable for the ULEZ, the fee is £12.50 a day for passenger cars – that’s on top of the existing £11.50 a day that motorists already pay for the congestion charging zone.

Large lorries and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will have to pay much more – the daily charge is £100 – and penalties are much higher as well.

Which cars have to pay?

It’s older, more polluting cars that will be hit. To be exempt from the charge, petrol cars, vans and minibuses must meet Euro-4 emissions standards, while diesels will have to comply with more recent Euro-6 levels. Motorbikes must be Euro-3 classification or later.

It means that you’ll only be able to enter the zone without being charged when behind the wheel of a relatively new diesel or a petrol model in the region of 13 years old.

Are any vehicles exempt?

Some vehicles won’t be liable for the charge. Black taxis are first and foremost. Cars registered with ‘disabled’ or ‘disabled passenger vehicle’ tax classes will also be exempt – until October 2025 at least. In addition, people who currently pay residents’ congestion charge payments will be given some time to replace their vehicles for ULEZ-standard models if they haven’t already.

Of course, electric vehicles and any that exceed Euro-6 standards won’t be stung for the charge either.

What are the penalties?

Failing to pay the ULEZ fee will be treated similarly to the congestion charge. You’ll be given a penalty of £160, which is reduced to £80 if you pay within 14 days. Of course, you’ll be able to appeal against the fine if you believe Transport for London has made a mistake, but you won’t be able to cite ignorance as a defence – the ULEZ will be clearly signposted at all entrances and exits.

For lorries and other large vehicles, the fine is much more severe – £1,000, reduced to £500 if paid within 14 days.

How do I check if my vehicle meets the ULEZ standard?

Go to tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/vrm-checker-ulez and enter your vehicle’s number plate details to find out if you’ll have to pay the charge.

Peugeot 508

Summary

The Peugeot 508 is a medium-sized liftback and estate model. The current version was launched in 2018, and is considered a big step up from its predecessor. The liftback body style was launched first, with the SW (estate) versions arriving about six months afterwards.

The 508 has received a wider range of scores than usual from the UK media, ranging from average to outstanding. Particular praise has been given to its striking design, comfort and safety levels, while criticisms have been made regarding its driving experience and practicality compared to rivals.

A mid-life facelift for the Peugeot 508 arrived in the UK in late 2023. This is an update to the current model, rather than a significantly new vehicle. There are some minor styling and trim changes, along with some interior technology updates.

As of September 2025, the Peugeot 508 holds a New Car Expert Rating of C, with a score of 63%. It scores highly for its low average CO2 emissions (thanks to the plug-in hybrid). However, its safety rating and media review scores are only average, while running costs, the 508’s historic reliability record and Peugeot’s new car warranty coverage are all poor.

Notes on safety rating

The Peugeot 508 was tested by Euro NCAP back in 2018 and awarded a five-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2025 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

Although the rating has now expired, the score is still useful if you are comparing a used 508 to vehicles of similar age – whose ratings will have probably also expired.

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

The Peugeot 508 has a reliability score that’s very worse than average, according to exclusive workshop and extended warranty data provided by our partners at MotorEasy. This score covers both the current-generation 508 and the original (pre-2018) version.

The average repair bill to date has been a bit over £600, although gearbox repairs have been very expensive with an average of almost £2,000.

If you’re looking at a used Peugeot 508, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase covers all of these potential problem areas.

Peugeot’s new car warranty is pretty much the bare minimum offered in the UK, with a duration of three years and a limit of 60,000 miles. Other rivals in the price bracket do better (and in some cases, much better).

In addition to the standard new car warranty, hybrid versions of the 508 have an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery components.

Warranty on a used Peugeot 508

  • If you are purchasing an ‘Approved Used’ 508 from an official Peugeot dealership, you will get a minimum six-month warranty included.
  • If you are buying a used 508 from an independent dealership, any warranty offered will vary and will probably be managed by a third-party warranty company.
  • If you are buying a used 508 from a private seller, there are no warranty protections beyond any remaining portion of the original new car warranty.

If you’re looking to buy a used car that is approaching the end of its warranty period, a used car warranty is usually a worthwhile investment. Check out The Car Expert’s guide to the best used car warranty providers, which will probably be cheaper than a warranty sold by a dealer.

Lexus ES

Summary

The Lexus ES is a large executive saloon, which was launched in the UK in 2019 to replace the discontinued GS model. The ES had not previously been sold in Europe, although it has been offered for many years in the USA.

In the UK, the ES is only available with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. No conventional petrol or diesel models are offered.

The Lexus ES has received generally good to very good reviews from UK media sources. Consumer titles have rated it highly for its build quality, comfort and refinement, while performance-oriented titles have criticised its driving dynamics.

This generation of ES has now ended production, ahead of an all-new model arriving in the UK in the summer of 2026.

As of March 2026, the Lexus ES holds a New Car Expert Rating of C with a score of 61%.

The hybrid’s fuel consumption is more conservative than the average car, and it’s insurance premiums aren’t likely to be higher than the market average. Even better news is that servicing and maintenance costs are predicted to remain affordable over the course of five years of ownership.

Volvo XC40

Summary

The Volvo XC40 is a small SUV/crossover, and the first generation of its kind from Volvo. It has won several awards, including European Car of the Year in 2018.

The XC40 range is available with either a petrol engine or plug-in hybrid powertrain. A diesel engine was previously offered but has been dropped, while a fully electric version called the XC40 Recharge (later changed to EX40) joined the range in early 2021. We have a separate page for that model. Confusingly, the ‘Recharge’ name is also used for the plug-in hybrid versions.

The Volvo XC40 has received particular praise for its build quality, refinement, styling and extremely high safety standards. The main criticisms have related to its fairly average driving dynamics and an underpowered entry-level T3 petrol engine.

As of October 2025, the Volvo XC40 currently holds a New Car Expert Rating of B, with a score of 66%. It scores top marks for its media review scores and reliability record, while its CO2 emissions are also low. However, its safety rating score has now expired due to age, its running costs are high and Volvo’s new car warranty coverage is poor.

Running costs for the Volvo XC40 range are higher than average, according to data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our commercial partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

Fuel economy is around the market average for diesel-engined versions – we are yet to receive consumption data for petrol-only and plug-in hybrid models.

The battery range of the plug-in hybrid model is rather poor when compared to most rivals, with a reported 28 miles of real-world all-electric driving.

Compared to the rest of the SUV sector, the car’s service and maintenance costs are pretty average. Insurance costs are pretty average too, based on data from the UK’s insurance group assessor, Thatcham Research.

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

As of October 2025, the Volvo XC40 has a very good reliability record; however, we must caveat that by pointing out that this is currently only based on a relatively small number of repair claims.

Unsurprisingly, engine problems have been the most expensive issues to date, with an average bill of nearly £500. However, as the XC40 gets older, we will see more data coming in and we’ll continue to update this information.

Skoda Karoq

Summary

The Skoda Karoq is a medium-sized SUV/crossover, which was launched in late 2017 as a replacement for the previous Skoda Yeti model. It shares its platform with several other models in the Volkswagen group, such as the VW Tiguan, SEAT Ateca and Audi Q3.

The Karoq has received generally good to very good reviews from the UK media, and is one of the top-ranked mid-sized SUVs. It has been particularly praised for its practicality and value for money, while the only real criticisms have been that the Karoq is rather bland and characterless.

The Karoq was given a mild mid-life facelift in early 2022, consisting of small exterior design tweaks, new interior trim detailing and new on-board tech additions. As of March 2026, the Skoda Karoq holds a New Car Expert Rating of C, with a score of 61%. It gets good grades for its media review scores and low running costs, but its CO2 emissions are now only average. In addition, its safety rating has now expired due to age and Skoda’s new car warranty offering is poor.

Karoq highlights

  • Plenty of cabin space
  • Impressive interior fit and finish
  • Easy and relaxing driving experience
  • Value for money entry-level model
  • Capable off-roader

Karoq lowlights

  • Charmless looks
  • Top models can get pricey
  • Bland performance

The Skoda Karoq is a relatively affordable car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

While the fuel consumption for both petrol and diesel models sits at around the market average, the Karoq’s insurance premiums are estimated to be cheaper than many of its mainstream rivals.

BMW 3 Series

Summary

The BMW 3 Series is a medium-sized saloon and estate model, and has long been considered the benchmark for the compact executive saloon class. The latest generation was unveiled in late 2018 and went on sale in the UK in early 2019.

The estate (known as Touring) models were launched several months after the saloon versions. Additionally, the high-performance M3 saloon arrived in the UK in early 2021, joined by a Touring version in 2023.

The 3 Series received a mid-life facelift in the summer of 2022, with further updates in the summer of 2024. This was most noticeable inside the cabin, which received much larger display screens for both the driver and in the central dashboard.

The BMW 3 Series has received very high scores from the UK media. As with previous generations, particular praise has been directed at how well the BMW 3 Series drives compared to its rivals. The quality and design of the interior are better than previous models, although other cars are just as good or better.

As of July 2025, the BMW 3 Series holds a New Car Expert Rating of A, with a score of 70%. It scores top marks for its strong media reviews and low CO2 emissions, while its safety score is still good. However, like most BMW models, the overall rating is dragged down by a poor reliability record and high running costs.

3 Series highlights

  • Still the best car in its class to drive
  • Interior a significant improvement
  • Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options available
  • Cabin space now a match for rivals

3 Series lowlights

  • Battery range on older plug-in hybrid models not great
  • Ride firm on models with sports suspension
  • Digital display not as good as those on rivals on pre-facelift cars

Clean Air Index: 6.2 / 10
Energy Efficiency Index: 6 / 10

The rating above only applies to the 320d saloon, which is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with an automatic gearbox. It does not apply to any other engine/gearbox combination.

Overall, the BMW 3 Series range performs well in terms of low CO2 emissions across most engines in the range.

The BMW 3 Series is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to running costs. Fuel consumption for the petrol models is worse than average, while the diesels are better than average.

The plug-in hybrid models look great on paper, but this is entirely unrealistic. That’s not BMW’s fault, but rather the way that the EU/UK regulations are written. The battery range for the plug-in hybrid also looks poor, but is actually not too bad for a plug-in hybrid car.

Insurance costs are about average, while scheduled servicing and maintenance costs are average to good.

Warranty rating

Hybrid or plug-in hybrid modelsA82%
New car warranty duration3 years
New car warranty mileageUnlimited miles
Battery warranty duration8 years
Battery warranty mileage100,000 miles

BMW’s new car warranty is only average, and not as attractive as some other cars in a similar price bracket as the 3 Series.

The duration is three years, with no limit on mileage – although, in reality, the mileage numbers are likely to be fairly irrelevant as most cars only cover about 10,000 miles each year.

In addition to the standard new car warranty, the 3 Series plug-in hybrid models have an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery components. The overall rating above is a mix of the different models.

Reliability rating

MotorEasy logo 600x167

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

As of April 2025 (our latest data point), the BMW 3 Series is very poor when it comes to reliability with a rating of E and a score of just 32%, according to workshop and warranty data provided by our commercial partner, MotorEasy. This covers both the current model (2019 onwards) as well as earlier generations.

Based on a large number of warranty repairs, the average repair costs is also quite high at nearly £800. That’s a lot more than the cost of a used car warranty, which is certainly worth considering if you own a 3 Series or are thinking about buying one.

The most common problems reported for the 3 Series relate to its engine, and unfortunately these are also the most expensive faults, with an average repair bill of about £1,600. Gearbox problems are also similarly expensive to repair, but appear to be less common. Repair bills for electrical system, engine and suspension are more competitive, thankfully, averaging less than £400 for each.

The current BMW 3 Series has also had 15 recalls to date, which is a very high number (see ‘Recalls’ section below) and covers a range of different problems.

Make sure that any used car warranty you are purchasing covers all of these potential problem areas.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Summary

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a mid-size SUV launched in 2017 as the brand’s first entry into the premium SUV market. It received a minor update in early 2023, but the core model is now several years old in a fast-moving segment.

The Stelvio has consistently been praised by UK media for its sharp steering and engaging handling, offering a more driver-focused experience than many similarly sized SUVs. Engine performance has also been well received, particularly in higher-output versions.

However, interior material quality and infotainment technology have never fully matched the strongest competitors in the class, and the overall cabin design now shows its age. Running costs are relatively high compared with newer rivals, particularly in petrol form.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio originally achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, but that result has now expired under current testing protocols due to the model’s age.

As of February 2026, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio holds a New Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 57%. Media review scores and CO2 emissions are only average, while high running costs and an expired Euro NCAP safety rating significantly reduce the overall result.

Stelvio highlights

  • Engaging handling for a mid-size SUV
  • Strong engine performance options
  • Distinctive Alfa Romeo styling
  • Comfortable ride quality
  • Wide model range including performance variants

Stelvio lowlights

  • Interior quality below key premium rivals
  • Infotainment system now dated
  • High running costs
  • Euro NCAP safety rating expired
  • Design and technology now showing their age

Notes on safety rating

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio was originally tested by Euro NCAP back in 2017 and awarded a five-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2024 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

However, if you are comparing a used Stelvio to vehicles of similar age, whose ratings will have probably also expired, its safety rating score is still useful.

No eco rating

As of February 2026, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has not been lab tested by Green NCAP.

If the Stelvio is put through the Green NCAP lab testing programme, we will publish the results here.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio can be quite an expensive car to run depending on the model you choose, according to data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our technical partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

Petrol models offer 33 mpg on average, which is lower than petrol equivalents in the rival BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC model lines. Diesel models offer around 46 mpg on average, making them a more economical choice.

Insurance premiums are fairly average when compared to the market as a whole, as are service and maintenance costs for the first five years from new.

Reliability rating

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has a middling reliability score, according to workshop and extended warranty data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our partner, MotorEasy. However, it’s worth noting that this score is based on very few cars to date, so it could change for better or worse over time.

Warranty rating

New car warranty information for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Overall ratingC51%
New car warranty duration5 years
New car warranty mileage75,000 miles
Battery warranty duration0 years
Battery warranty mileage0 miles

Alfa Romeo’s new car warranty is better than average, and better than several premium brands in a similar price bracket as the Stelvio.

The duration is five years, with a limit of 75,000 miles.

Warranty on a used Alfa Romeo Stelvio

  • If you are buying an ‘Alfa Romeo Certified’ Stelvio from an official Alfa Romeo dealership, you will get a minimum 12-month warranty included.
  • If you are buying a used Alfa Romeo Stelvio from an independent dealership, any warranty offered will vary and will probably be managed by a third-party warranty company.
  • If you are buying a used Alfa Romeo Stelvio from a private seller, there are no warranty protections beyond any remaining portion of the original new car warranty.

If you’re looking to buy any used car that is approaching the end of its warranty period, a used car warranty is usually a worthwhile investment. Check out The Car Expert’s guide to the best used car warranty providers, which will probably be cheaper than a warranty sold by a dealer.

Mulliner appeal for Bentley Bentayga SUV

Bentley has unveiled a Design Series limited edition version of its V8-powered Bentayga SUV.

The new variant gains bespoke exterior and interior elements from Mulliner – Bentley’s in-house customisation brand – to create what the brand describes as a more ‘distinctive road presence’.

Based on the Bentayga V8, which uses a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged engine, the Design Series comes with the SUV’s Blackline specification as standard, adding a lower front bumper and twin tailpipes finished in gloss black.

New seven-spoke ‘Paragon’ wheels have also been added, finished in Palladium Grey with polished accents, and with the signature self-levelling ‘B’ badge at the centre.

Inside, the Design Series is available with one of four colour themes – Pillar Box Red, Orange, Mulliner White and Klein Blue. Each provides different accenting and is paired with Bentley’s ‘Beluga’ leather upholstery as well as Piano Black and carbon-fibre panels with again a bespoke weave pattern.

A Breitling clock has also been fitted to the centre console, which features a mother-of-pearl face and diamond jewelling.

‘Design Series’ badging is included on the seats and on the exterior of the Bentayga V8.

With its recently introduced V8 petrol engine the luxury SUV, which develops 550hp and 770Nm of torque – completing the 0-60mph sprint in 4.4 secondsand capable of hitting a maximum speed of 180mph.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, but will no doubt t see a significant increase over the standard Bentayga V8’s £136,200 starting price.

Range Rover Evoque

Summary

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a medium-sized SUV, built here in the UK at Land Rover’s Halewood plant. The second-generation model was launched in early 2019, following on from the successful original model that had been on sale since 2011.

Unlike the original version, the current Evoque is only available in a five-door body style. Both the petrol and diesel options are mild hybrids while a plug-in hybrid joined the range in mid-2020, an overall update following in 2021 with new infotainment systems. We are still awaiting a predicted full-electric model, however, and the convertible of the first generation is yet to be repeated.

The Range Rover Evoque has received consistently good reviews from the UK media, with particular praise for its comfort and safety assist technology. “It features an array of new technology and is one of the most luxurious small SUVs,” says Carbuyer.

The main criticisms of the new model have mainly been directed at its evolutionary styling and rather cramped rear seating – Business Car warns that the boot space is not as commodious as quoted and “You’ll probably find the boot less accommodating than those in the BMW X1 or Volvo XC40.”

The Evoque’s overall Expert Rating score has been dragged down by what Which? describes as “Land Rover’s dire reliability record”.

As of March 2026, the Range Rover Evoque has a New Car Expert Rating of C, with a score of 63%. It scores highly for its low CO2 emissions (thanks to the plug-in hybrid model bringing down the average), while media reviews are decent. However, its safety rating is now only average, while running costs are high and reliability are poor.

As well as a paying a premium price tag when you buy a Range Rover Evoque, you’ll be spending plenty to keep it running over your first five years, according to information provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

Fuel consumption for the petrol models is very poor, while diesels are only average. The plug-in hybrid looks good on paper, but every plug-in hybrid looks good – it’s a function of inadequate EU/UK government lab tests that all car manufacturers have to use. There’s no way you’re going to get 191 miles out of one gallon (4.5 litres) of petrol and a bit of electricity in the real world…

Servicing costs are average for a vehicle in this price bracket, but you’ll find plenty of similarly-sized small SUVs that are significantly cheaper to own and run.

Reliability rating

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

As of April 2025 (our most recent data point), the Range Rover Evoque has a reliability rating of 42%, which is a poor result and one that has been declining over the last few years. This score is based on workshop and warranty provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our commercial partner, Motorway. It applies to both the current Evoque and earlier (pre-2019) models.

Based on quite a large number of claims, the average repair cost for an Evoque to date is more than £800 – which is obviously a lot more than the cost of a used car warranty so that’s certainly worth considering.

Engine problems are the most common faults reported, with an average repair bill of more than £1,400. Electrical system faults are also common, but much less expensive. Gearbox problems have been the most expensive to date, with an average repair bill of more than £2,000.

Costs for all repair categories are also reasonably expensive compared to similar cars, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re looking at a used Range Rover Evoque.

Range Rover Evoque review

60-second summary

What is it?
The latest Range Rover Evoque is the all-new second-generation version of the brand’s best-seller.

Key features
Very off-road capable, refined comfort and performance, clever new tech

Our view
Land Rover has played with its best-seller just enough to ensure it is a credible threat to all the new rivals, without losing the basics that made the first Evoque such a success.

It’s very upmarket on the road, leaves those rivals behind off the road, and offers lots of clever yet practical new technology. Expect to see many on the road.

What does the rest of the UK motoring media think of the new Range Rover Evoque?

Full review

Introduction

Creating the second-generation Range Rover Evoque was bound to strike fear into the clever design types at parent company Land Rover. This would be very much the ‘difficult second album’ because the first one had proven a hit, beyond even the most ambitious marketing man’s dreams.

When the first Range Rover Evoque launched in 2011, it ushered in a sea change in design style. Before Evoque, Range Rovers were big, dominating vehicles with square proportions and sharp angles.

The Evoque, however, was not only compact (the same size as a Ford Focus), its coupe-esque shell offered curves where before there had been edges. It clearly hit a sweet spot with customers, because overnight Land Rover sales doubled, fuelled entirely by Evoque.

In the process, the Evoque also created a whole new segment, the premium compact SUV. And that makes things doubly tough for the replacement – not only does it have to be better than its predecessor, it has to compete with all the rivals that have come since, such as the Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and most recently the Car-of-the-Year winning Volvo XC40.

Perhaps not surprising is that the exterior visuals of the new Evoque look a lot like the old one. It is, indeed, almost the same size as the outgoing model and the designers have worked hard to maintain the proportions. Those exterior looks are cleaner, with clear influences from Range Rover’s latest model, the Velar – Evoque’s slightly bigger brother.

The big advances in the new Evoque, we are told, are in refinement, capability and sustainability – “We’ve tried to make it more Range Rover”. This means a quieter, more comfortable on-the-road performance, an even better off-road capability than is already expected of a Range Rover, and lots more tech, grabbed from other recent launches in the Jaguar Land Rover range.

Buying and owning the Range Rover Evoque

Prices for the new Range Rover Evoque start at £31,600, which buys a base model with a 150hp diesel engine and front-wheel drive. Remember when the idea of a Land Rover without all wheels driven was anathema? Market forces determine otherwise these days.

Mind you the entry-level version is the only Evoque one can buy in front-wheel only form. An extra £3,500 turns the 150hp diesel all-wheel drive and adds a nine-speed auto transmission (plus a mild hybrid element to the engine, more of which shortly).

In total there are two diesel power options and three petrol, the most expensive Evoque being a 300hp petrol variant that starts from £40,350 before you start adding trim levels.

Trims? There are lots! Three main levels increase the tech count and other aspects such as the size of the wheels, right up to 21 inches.

There is also an ‘R-Design’ upgrade on each trim, costing an extra £1,500 and adding bespoke alloy wheels, posher leather on the seats and steering wheel and such like. Finally, there is a launch ‘First Edition’ model. This costs more than £16,000 above the base Evoque but includes some very nice options including much of the new tech.

The new Evoque may be the same size as the old one but we are promised that the only parts not replaced are the clever door hinges – unlocked they stand proud of the doors but get in and they disappear flush into the door skin.

The Evoque is built on Land Rover’s latest Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA), which is designed to accommodate forthcoming electric models. It also liberates extra space – the 2cm longer wheelbase is most obviously felt in the rear seats which gain extra kneeroom, but also in the boot, which at 591 litres is 10% larger than in the old car. Practicality elsewhere includes a 20% larger diesel tank, which means the Evoque will go a lot further between fill-ups.

In terms of safety the new Evoque hasn’t yet been tested by Euro NCAP so we don’t know if it will replicate its predecessor’s top five-star score of 2011. All versions come with plenty of driver aids including a rear-view camera and emergency braking, though one has to either choose a high-spec model or dive into the options list for the Drive Pack, that adds a blind spot aid, adaptive cruise control and high-speed emergency braking.

Land Rover is also heavily promoting the residual values of the new Evoque, particularly vital to its extensive slice of fleet customers – an average of 63% after three years is quoted, rising to 67%.

Audi A6

Summary

The Audi A6 was a large executive vehicle available in saloon and estate (called Avant) model. This model is the fifth generation in the A6 line, which was sold in the UK between 2018 and 2025.

Top-spec performance versions of the A6 saloon and estate were called the S6. There was also the A6 allroad model, which had a beefed-up estate body and improved ground clearance for off-road driving, at which it was highly capable and better than many luxury SUVs.

There was also the extreme, 600hp RS 6 Avant, which had extensive alterations from the regular A6 family and is not included here.

The Audi A6 received consistently good to very good scores from the UK media throughout its production life, with particular praise for its interior space, comfort and refinement.

Generally, testers rated it higher for its comfort than its driving characteristics – “it cossets occupants rather than thrills its driver,” said Auto Express, while others preferred the dynamic prowess of a BMW 5 Series. Top Gear added that the A6 was not particularly fun behind the wheel, but was “safe, solid, quiet and dependable”.

Audi usually impresses with the build quality of its cabins and the technology available for its cars, although the twin-touchscreen centre console display of the A6 was not universally popular. “Not everyone is going to like the lack of buttons or physical controls,” said Auto Trader.

This generation of A6 ended production in late 2024, paving the way for an all-new Audi A6 that was launched in 2025. There is also an electric Audi A6 e-tron version as well.

As of July 2025, the Audi A6 has a Used Car Expert Rating of E, with a score of 52%. It scores top marks for its low CO2 emissions, helped by the plug-in hybrid model, while the safety rating is still good despite the car’s age. But its score is dragged down by its poor reliability results and high running costs.

Audi A6 highlights

  • Comfortable and refined
  • Extensive technology taken from A8 flagship
  • Plenty of rear-seat room
  • Choice of petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid
  • Top-notch interior quality

Audi A6 lowlights

  • Driving dynamics not as good as a BMW 5 Series
  • Plug-in hybrid not as sophisticated as some rivals
  • Can be expensive, especially with options
  • A6 Allroad is pricey
  • Touchscreen controls not as effective as regular buttons

Notes on safety rating

The Audi A6 was tested by Euro NCAP back in 2018 and awarded a five-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2025 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

Although the rating has now expired, the score is still useful if you are comparing a used A6 to vehicles of similar age, whose ratings will have probably also expired.

Reliability rating

MotorEasy logo 600x167

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

The Audi A6 has a very poor reliability score of just 19%, according to workshop and warranty data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our partners at MotorEasy. Please note that this score covers both this generation of A6 and all previous (pre-2018) iterations.

About 20% of all reported problems with the A6 relate to its electrical system, with an average repair bill of more than £450. Engine problems are (unsurprisingly) expensive, and are unfortunately rather common too, costing around £1,900 on average. Warranty claims relating to the car’s gearbox also have an average cost of almost £3,000 and they’re certainly not uncommon.

If you own an Audi A6 or you’re looking at purchasing a used A6, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase covers all of these potential problem areas.

The Audi A6 is relatively expensive to run, according to data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our commercial partner, Clear Vehicle Data. These figures are averages of the overall Audi A6 range (not including the high-performance RS 6 model).

Fuel consumption is average for diesel models and poor for petrol models. The plug-in hybrids look good on paper, but this is largely a function of the flawed EU/UK government testing processes (an average fuel consumption of 208 mpg is obviously ridiculous, but that’s not Audi’s fault).

Servicing and repair costs are nothing special, either, and start getting very expensive after the first three years. Overall, the A6 is slightly more expensive to run than the BMW 5 Series.

Warranty rating

New car warranty information for the Audi A6

Overall ratingD31%
Petrol or diesel modelsE17%
Hybrid or plug-in hybrid modelsC56%
New car warranty duration3 years
New car warranty mileage60,000 miles
Battery warranty duration8 years
Battery warranty mileage100,000 miles

Audi’s new car warranty is pretty much the bare minimum offered in the UK, with a duration of three years and a limit of 60,000 miles. Other rivals in the price bracket do better (and in some cases, much better). Audi does offer an additional year or two years of warranty at extra cost when you buy the car from new.

In addition to the standard new car warranty, the A6 plug-in hybrid version has an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery components, which is why it gets a better score than the standard petrol and diesel models.

If you are purchasing an ‘Approved Used’ Audi A6 from an official Audi dealership, you will get a minimum one-year/20,000-mile warranty included. If you are buying a used A6 from an independent dealership, any warranty offered will vary and will probably be managed by a third-party warranty company. If you are buying a used A6 from a private seller, there are no warranty protections beyond anything that may be left on the original new car warranty.

If you’re looking to buy a used car that is approaching the end of its warranty period, a used car warranty is usually a worthwhile investment. Check out The Car Expert’s guide to the best used car warranty providers, which will probably be cheaper than a warranty sold by a dealer.

Not all vehicles are affected by recalls. You can check to see if your car is included in any of the above recalls by visiting the DVLA website or contacting your local Audi dealer.

If your car is affected by a recall, the vehicle must be repaired and you should not be charged for any work required. If you are buying a used A6, you should insist that any outstanding recall work is completed before you take delivery of the vehicle.

Toyota Yaris GR Sport test drive

Remember the limited-run Toyota Yaris GRMN of last year? That hot hatch took critics and enthusiasts by storm and was praised for launching the GRMN brand on an impressively high note — boasting a delicious 1.8-litre supercharged engine, incredible driving dynamics and a racy appearance to match.

Well, this is not that car. As is the way with many high-performance halo models, Toyota is aiming to capitalise on that success with a more pedestrian model that takes some inspiration from the Yaris GRMN hot hatch.

This is such a car — the Yaris GR Sport. Can it make waves in the sporty-ish hatch segment in the same way its full-blown sibling did in the heavyweight class?

What’s new about the Toyota Yaris GR Sport?

While the Yaris GRMN was a comprehensive project that required a major reworking of the original car’s underpinnings and tons of development time to perfect, the Yaris GR Sport is a lot more conventional.

What you’re looking at here is effectively a Yaris Hybrid with some go faster bits. At first glance, you may notice the addition of black-painted trim pieces, GR badging and lower ride height to give it that all-important racy look. What you probably won’t pick up immediately is the Sachs dampers lifted from the GRMN, as well as Bridgestone Potenza RE50 rubber also sourced from the hot hatch.

How does it look?

The attempts to make this look racier are worthwhile, though. New to the car are a number of black-painted, model-specific highlights, 17-inch black alloy wheels and a 1cm ride height drop, which gives it a more aggressive stance.

It’s at least effective at looking like a baby GRMN. Even at a standstill, it looks like it’s ready to be flung around a series of corners to exploit the grip of those sticky tyres — and that’s something every pseudo-hot hatch should try and emulate. Although other colours are available, we’d stick with the white finish for the ultimate GRMN emulation.

What’s the spec like?

Positioned at the top of the regular Toyota Yaris range, the GR Sport comes with a generous helping of equipment. As well as all the racier chassis and visual additions, it features cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, a rear-view camera, front parking sensors and Toyota’s Touch 2 infotainment system.

There’s also a decent helping of safety equipment — with pre-collision assist, lane departure warning, automatic high beam and road sign recognition all included at no extra cost.

While that may look a respectable amount of kit, it still makes the price of the car hard to justify — the GR Sport starts at £19,835. That’s about the same starting price as a Ford Fiesta ST — a proper hot hatch — and more than £1,000 over the list price of a more engaging and better equipped Suzuki Swift Sport.

Further still, the GRMN itself can still be picked up from dealers for as little as around £23,000 with delivery miles – which is a more tempting upgrade if you take monthly payments into account.

BMW 1 Series (2011 to 2019)

Summary

The BMW 1 Series was a medium-sized three- or five-door hatchback. This model is the second generation of 1 Series. It was launched in 2011, with a major update in 2015. It ended production in 2019 and was replaced with an all-new model.

Unlike the original 1 Series, there were no coupé or convertible versions of this model. Those cars were re-named the 2 Series and were positioned above the 1 Series in both price and specification.

The BMW 1 Series received mostly good to very good scores from the UK media, especially for the high-performance M140i model. Reviewers generally praised the car’s driving dynamics, but criticised the lack of interior and boot space.

As of February 2026, the second-generation BMW 1 Series holds a Used Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 58%. It gets good grades for its positive media review scores, but its reliability record is poor and its Euro NCAP safety rating has long since expired.

Notes on safety rating

The BMW 1 Series was awarded a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP back when this model was launched in 2012. However, this rating expired in January 2019 as the 1 Series no longer met the requirements for a five-star car. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

However, if you are comparing a used BMW 1 Series to vehicles of similar age, whose ratings will have probably also expired, its safety rating score is still useful. Compared to a new car, however, this generation of 1 Series lacks most the accident avoidance systems that are now standard.

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

As of April 2025 (our most recent data point), the BMW 1 Series has a reliability rating of 46%, which is well below average. This is based on warranty claims data provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our commercial partner, Motorway, and applies to both this generation 1 Series as well as both newer (2019 onwards) and older (pre-2011) models.

Based on quite a large number of claims, the average repair cost for a 1 Series to date is almost £700 – which is obviously a lot more than the cost of a used car warranty so that’s certainly worth considering.

A particular concern is the high number of engine problems, which are also the most expensive kind of problems with an average repair bill of around £1,400. Costs for the various other categories are also reasonably expensive compared to similar cars, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re looking at a used BMW 1 Series.

Mini hatch (2014 to 2024)

Summary

The Mini hatch is a small hatchback (although certainly not as small as it used to be) available in three- and five-door body styles. This third generation of the revitalised Mini under BMW ownership was mostly built here in the UK, and was replaced by an all-new model in 2024.

The John Cooper Works models were performance hot hatch versions of the Mini hatch. We have a separate page for the JCW models. Meanwhile, Mini models like the Clubman and Countryman were also different vehicles rather than variations of the hatchback. We also have a separate page for the Mini Convertible.

An electric version of the Mini hatch joined the range in early 2020. We have a separate page for that model here. Originally, the Mini hatch was also offered with diesel engines, but these were dropped in the final years of the car’s lifespan as diesel fell out of favour.

The third-generation Mini hatch models received generally good to very good reviews from the UK media and was one of the highest-rated small cars in our Expert Rating Index. The UK motoring media heaped praise on its driving dynamics, although it was criticised for its often kitschy and heavy-handed approach to British symbolism (which apparently plays well in export markets).

An all-new fourth-generation Mini hatch – to be known as the Mini Cooper – is now available in the UK.

No longer in production, the Mini hatch holds a Used Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 60%. It gets good grades for its low CO2 emissions, running costs and media review scores, but its reliability record is poor and its safety rating is well off the pace of newer cars.

Clean Air Index: 4.2 / 10
Energy Efficiency Index: 4.6 / 10
Greenhouse Gas Index: 3.8 / 10

The Mini Cooper 1.5-litre petrol automatic received a 2.5 star rating from Green NCAP in February 2021.

Green NCAP said: “The Mini hatch is tested here in its latest form and with the three-cylinder turbocharged 1.5 litre petrol engine. The car has a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) and a three-way catalyst and, on the whole, these work well to curb pollutant emissions.

“NOx is especially well controlled in all tests and the GPF helps to keep particulate number down. Ammonia, NH3, is the weak point and in the high-load highway test emissions of this unregulated greenhouse gas are high enough to negate the positive scores gained for the good control of other pollutants. Energy efficiency is unexceptional. N2O and CH4 are well controlled but emissions of CO2 result in modest scores in the tests.

“Overall, the car’s indexes are consistent in all three areas of assessment and lead to a 2½ star rating.”

This rating only applies to the 1.5-litre petrol automatic version of the Mini hatch, and does not imply similar ratings for other engine and gearbox combinations in the range.

Reliability rating

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

Across all three generations, the Mini hatch has a reliability score that is below average, according to workshop and warranty data from our commercial partner, MotorEasy.

The biggest concern is that the most common problem is also the most expensive one – engine issues. The average repair cost is about £700, so it’s worth carefully inspecting a used car or making sure you purchase an extended warranty for your Mini to cover you once the factory new car warranty runs out.

The Mini hatch is a relatively affordable car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

Fuel consumption is only average, which is disappointing for a supermini-sized hatchback. However, the news is much better for other costs. Servicing over the first five years should be excellent, while insurance premiums should also be very good – although with quite a wide variation, depending on which model you choose.

New car sales slip in March

New car registrations fell by 3% in March, traditionally one of the biggest months of the year for new car sales, according to the latest results published this morning by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Overall registrations were down by 16,000 compared to March last year. This was due to a fall of 10,000 units from business customers (an enormous drop, but a very small sector of the overall market) and 6,000 units from private buyers (a fall of just under 3%).

Fleet registrations, the largest market sector, were actually up by a few hundred units over the same month last year. However, there have been suggestions that fleet numbers may be exaggerated.

New car registrations, March 2019 | The Car Expert
New car registrations for March. How many of those fleet registrations are real customers?

Industry sources suspect there has been a lot of self-registration going on (pre-registered cars, dealer demonstrators, head office cars, and so on), so the real number of new fleet cars hitting the roads with actual customers may be significantly lower than the number suggest, with a lot of newly-registered cars sitting in paddocks around the country.

Indeed, one report suggests that several Volkswagen Group brands may have pre-registered thousands of cars in March. If we look at the reported registration numbers for Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda, they are all up in a falling market. Audi also improved massively relative to its last six months, so this sounds quite reasonable.

Underwhelming month for diesels and hybrids

While it’s no surprise to see diesel sales continuing to slide, the stagnation in alternatively-fuelled vehicles (electric and hybrid cars, basically) remains a concern. While there was growth of more than 7% on the same month last year, an overall market share of 5.5% is well below the average figure for 2018, and has slid backwards from the last two months.

As we’ve discussed previously, the fall in plug-in hybrid models is largely a result of new WLTP emissions legislation that came into effect in September last year, resulting in many plug-in models being withdrawn from sale until they can meet the new rules. They are slowly returning to sale, but not yet in the numbers that were available before September.

Small cars dominate the market in March

As often happens in plate-change months (March and September), smaller and cheaper cars were popular in new car showrooms last month.

Top ten new car registrations, March 2019 | The Car Expert
The ten best-selling new cars in March. Good month for the Vauxhall Corsa, but two fewer Fords than last month.

The Ford Fiesta remains on top of the charts, after holding off a strong challenge from the Vauxhall Corsa. The Mini hatch, BMW 1 Series and Toyota Yaris also reappeared in the lower half of the top ten.

Despite the Fiesta’s ongoing dominance of the UK car market, it was a slightly disappointing month for Ford. The Focus slipped back from second to sixth, while the Kuga and EcoSport fell out of the top ten altogether. Overall, Ford registrations were down 19% compared to the same month last year.

Given the concerns around pre-registrations in March, it is difficult to tell how authentic the reported numbers from each brand really are. So take any of the below with a large pinch of salt…

Dacia had a fantastic month, with registrations up by 85%. MG continued its recent success, with an 83% increase, while Volvo, Citroën, Jaguar and Bentley also saw double-digit growth over the same month last year.

On the gloomier side of the road, it was a tough month for Infiniti, DS Automobiles, Maserati, McLaren, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, SsangYong, Abarth, Ford, Nissan, Honda, Subaru, Smart and Hyundai, who all saw double-digit falls compared to 12 months ago.

We now head into what is likely to be a slower second quarter, as our politicians do their best to avoid making any decisions on how to enact Brexit. Combined with what is likely to be a high number of pre-registered cars that will hit the market in June, it could be a poor quarter for new cars and a better period for used cars.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2014 to 2021)

Summary

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class was a medium-sized saloon and estate model. This generation was launched in 2014, updated in 2018 and ended production in early 2021 ahead of the arrival of the current-generation C-Class.

The C-Class is famous for its place as a premium smaller saloon from Mercedes-Benz. The last generation was also available in coupé and convertible body styles, and there were high-performance models from Mercedes-AMG. This page relates to the saloon models only though.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class received generally good scores from across the UK media throughout its life, although its Expert Rating fell behind the Audi A4 and Volvo S60/V60 twins towards the end of its life, and was well down on the class-leading BMW 3 Series. It was particularly praised for its interior design and comfort, although the BMW 3 Series remained a better car for keen drivers.

As of December 2025, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class holds a Used Car Expert Rating of D, with a score of 59%. It gets good grades for its low CO2 emissions (helped by the plug-in hybrid version), while it also received good review scores from motoring journalists. However, its reliability record is only average while its running costs are high and its safety rating has long ago expired.

Notes on safety rating

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class was originally tested by Euro NCAP back in 2014 and awarded a five-star rating. However, this rating expired in January 2021 and is no longer valid as the car no longer meets the standards required for such a rating. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

Although the rating has now expired, the score is still useful if you are comparing a used C-Class to vehicles of similar age – whose ratings will have probably also expired.

Reliability rating

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has a reliability score that’s below average, according to exclusive extended warranty data provided by our partners at MotorEasy. This score covers both the generation of C-Class shown here and older (pre-2014) version, in saloon, coupé and convertible (Cabriolet) bodystyles.

About a third of all reported problems with the C-Class relate to its electrical system, with an average repair bill of £500. The other area to look out for is the suspension, which accounts for more than a fifth of repair claims. Again, the average bill for these was about £500. Gearbox problems are (unsurprisingly) the most expensive, with an average repair price of £1,500, but fortunately they appear to be relatively rare.

If you’re looking at a used Mercedes-Benz C-Class, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase covers all of these potential problem areas.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a relatively expensive car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

The plug-in hybrid model may look very good on paper, but that’s mainly because the official UK/EU government lab tests are pretty useless for measuring plug-in hybrids. There are no real-world driving circumstances where you will get 196 miles from a gallon (4.5 litres) of petrol and some electricity…

We don’t have servicing costs for the C-Class due to its age, but Mercedes-Benz dealers tend to be pretty expensive.

Electric or hybrid modelsC56%
New car warranty duration3 years
New car warranty mileage60,000 miles
Battery warranty duration8 years
Battery warranty mileage100,000 miles

Due to its age, every example of this generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is now out of new car warranty. This is partly because Mercedes’ new car warranty offering is only three years, while some brands now offer up to seven years.

Warranty on a used Mercedes-Benz C-Class

  • If you are buying an ‘Approved Used’ Mercedes-Benz C-Class from an official Mercedes-Benz dealership, you will get a minimum 12-month warranty included.
  • If you are buying a used Mercedes-Benz C-Class from an independent dealership, any warranty offered will vary and will probably be managed by a third-party warranty company.
  • If you are buying a used Mercedes-Benz C-Class from a private seller, there are no warranty protections beyond any remaining portion of the original new car warranty.

If you’re looking to buy any used car that is approaching the end of its warranty period, a used car warranty is usually a worthwhile investment. Check out The Car Expert’s guide to the best used car warranty providers, which will probably be cheaper than a warranty sold by a dealer.

As of September 2024 (our most recent data point), there have been a staggering 80 DVSA vehicle safety recalls on this generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class to address different issues. However, recall information is updated very regularly, so this may have changed.

Not all vehicles are affected by recalls. You can check to see if your car is included in any of the above recalls by visiting the DVLA website or contacting your local Mercedes-Benz dealer.

If your car is affected by a recall, the vehicle must be repaired and you should not be charged for any work required. If you are buying a used C-Class, you should insist that any outstanding recall work is completed before you take delivery of the vehicle.

Toyota Yaris (2011 to 2019)

Summary

The Toyota Yaris is a small supermini-class five-door hatchback. This is the third-generation model, which was originally launched back in 2011 and saw major updates in both 2014 and 2017. It was replaced by an all-new model in summer 2020.

The third-gen Yaris was unique in the supermini class during its lifespan for being available with a hybrid power option, which became the most popular version of the model. A diesel was originally part of the engine line-up, but Toyota dropped it due to falling demand in later years.

This generation of Toyota Yaris generally received average to good scores from most UK media sources, with the hybrid power unit being better regarded than the regular petrol versions.

As of March 2026, the third-generation Toyota Yaris holds a Used Car Expert Rating of A, with a score of 69%. It scores top marks for its reliability record and low running costs, while its CO2 emissions are also low. However, its safety score is poor compared to newer cars and its media review scores are mostly poor.

Key specifications

Body style: Small five-door hatch
Engines: petrol, hybrid
Price: From £12,995 on-road

Launched: Summer 2011

Kia Sportage (2015 to 2021)

Summary

The Kia Sportage is a medium-sized SUV/crossover. This version is the fourth generation, which was launched in late 2015 and updated in the second half of 2018. It ended production in mid-2021 and was replaced the all-new, fifth-generation model in late 2021.

The Sportage received a range of reviews from UK media sources, from average to outstanding. It was generally considered to be very good value for money and came with an industry-leading seven-year new car warranty, which means that even used models will probably have a longer factory warranty than many new cars from other brands.

No longer on sale, the fourth-generation Kia Sportage holds a Used Car Expert Rating of B, with a score of 67%. It gets good grades for its low running costs and CO2 emissions, but its reliability rating is only average and its safety rating is now well out of date.

Notes on safety rating

The Kia Sportage was assessed by Euro NCAP in 2014 and awarded a five-star rating. This rating expired in January 2022, as it no longer met the requirements for a four-star score. This is normal practice, as Euro NCAP reviews its ratings on most cars annually with most ratings expiring after about six or seven years.

However, if you are comparing a used Kia Sportage to vehicles of similar age, whose ratings will have probably also expired, its safety rating score is still useful.

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

As of April 2025 (our most recent data point), the Kia Sportage has a reliability score of 76%, which is above average according to warranty data provided exclusively to us by our commercial partner, MotorEasy. This score applies to both this generation Sportage and also to both newer (2022 onwards) and previous (pre-2015) generations.

The average repair bill for claims is quite expensive at more than £700, which is considerably more than the cost of a used car warranty so that’s certainly worth considering if you are looking at a used Sportage.

Engine and gearbox problems are unsurprisingly the most expensive to fix, with the average repair cost of these more than £1,400. Engine problems are also the most common type of problem, so make sure any used car warranty you purchase cover this.

The Kia Sportage is a relatively affordable car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

The fuel consumption of standard petrol models is below the market average, but diesel and hybrid models are much more economical. The Sportage’s insurance premiums should be pretty cheap too.

Ford Puma on the way back as a coupe crossover

Ford is to revive a nameplate from the brand’s recent past on an all-new coupe crossover.

The Puma badge was previously worn by a small two-seater sports coupe but will now be used on the crossover with a mild-hybrid petrol powertrain.

First glimpses of the new model were revealed at an event in Amsterdam that also saw the unveiling of the third-generation Kuga SUV.

Ford says that the Puma will offer class-leading boot space and athletic styling. It will further extend the Ford SUV line-up, which now includes the Fiesta and Focus Active models, as well as the EcoSport, Kuga, Edge and Explorer.

SUVs now account for more than 20% of Ford total sales, with registrations rising by 19% in 2018 alone.

Developing 155hp, the EcoBoost Hybrid setup pairs a 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol turbo engine with a belt-driven starter/generator, which helps improve the model’s efficiency and recovers energy for the electrical system through braking and coasting. Ford claims the Puma will achieve at least 50mpg and CO2 emissions of 124g/km.

Ford Puma The Car Expert
Original Puma was a sports car sold between 1997 and 2007.

In terms of styling, the Puma maintains its sporty roots as it comes with high-mounted headlights, smooth lines and short overhangs. It also has a raised ride height for a ‘confidence-enhancing driver experience’.

Stuart Rowley, Ford of Europe president, describes the new model as innovatively engineered and seductively styled. “We think Puma is going to really resonate with compact-car customers in Europe. If you want a car that can turn heads on Friday night, and swallow your flat-pack furniture with ease on Saturday afternoon, then you’ve found it.

“We’ve gone to every length to give customers the flexibility they want, with progressive and evocative styling, so that they can drive the best-looking car they’ve ever owned.”

Prices for the new Puma are yet to be confirmed, but Ford says that sales will begin by the end of 2019, the car produced at the brand’s Craiova plant in Romania.

Ford also showed new Kuga, including a plug-in hybrid version, at Amsterdam event.

Volkswagen Tiguan (2016 to 2024)

Summary

The Volkswagen Tiguan was a medium-sized SUV/crossover. This is the second-generation version, which was launched in 2016 and ending production in late 2023 ahead of the launch of an all-new model in 2024.

A lengthened model called the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, which has seven seats, joined the range in early 2018. The Tiguan range received a mild facelift at the end of 2020.

The Tiguan received mostly good to very good ratings from across the UK media, with widespread praise for its refinement and practicality.

The Volkswagen Tiguan shares its platform, engines and many other components with the SEAT Ateca, Skoda Karoq and Audi Q3, which are all similar mid-sized SUVs.

No longer on sale, the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has a Used Car Expert Rating of C, with a score of 63%.

Reliability rating

Reliability data provided exclusively for The Car Expert by MotorEasy

All data based on MotorEasy average workshop costs for extended car warranty claims

The Volkswagen Tiguan has an average reliability score, according to exclusive workshop and extended warranty data provided by our partner MotorEasy. This score covers both this generation Tiguan and the original (pre-2016) models.

The Tiguan’s most common mechanical problems relate to suspension, which account for close to a quarter of all warranty claims. These suspension repairs are relatively inexpensive, with an average repair bill of just over £250. Worth watching out for are gearbox problems, which are not hugely common but which have an average repair bill of about £1,700.

Given the average reliability score and potentially expensive bills, make sure any extended warranty cover you purchase for a Volkswagen Tiguan covers all of these potential problem areas.

Running costs for the Volkswagen Tiguan are a bit of a mixed bag, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.

We don’t have independently verified fuel consumption data for the petrol models, but the CO2 levels (which are linked closely to fuel consumption) are average. Meanwhile, fuel consumption for the diesels is poor.

The plug-in hybrid looks great on paper, but that’s due to the woeful EU/UK goverment lab tests that are completely useless at measuring a plug-in hybrid…

On the positive side, insurance costs, as well as servicing and maintenance over the first five years, should be very good.
